Cyprus Holidays
are an interesting way of seeing the island and understanding its history, but North Cyprus is not an easy place to get to! This is not a bad thing, as it keeps this part of the island unspoilt by tourism, but it does mean you have to take more time to plan more for your holidays to North Cyprus.
Holidays in North Cyprus By Air
The only country to fly directly into Ercan Airport in North Cyprus is Turkey, and therefore all flights require a stopover at a Turkish airport such as Ankara or Izmir for around an hour in order to meet international regulations.
In the early summer of 2010, Cyprus Turkish Airlines (which was previously North Cyprus’s main airline) went out of business leaving only two main airlines which fly to North Cyprus – Pegasus Airways and Turkish Airlines. Unfortunately, flights do not always come cheap and Pegasus in particular has come under much criticism from Turkish Cypriots for their vast price increases since the collapse of Cyprus Turkish Airlines.
Since border crossing was relaxed in 2003, it is now possible to fly to Larnaca or Paphos in the south and get a taxi to your destination in the North. Be warned however that cab fares can be quite expensive. If you are in a European city, it usually works out cheapest to fly to Istanbul and get one of the daily flights to Ercan from there. Surprisingly, you can even do this from Greece.
Holidays to North Cyprus by Sea
Boat trips are a unique way to start your North Cyprus holidays. Mainland Turkey runs regular passenger ferries to the ports in Famagusta and Kyrenia. In the summer there is also a hovercraft service from south-west Turkey. It leaves three times a week and the journey takes around 8 hours.
