There are so many facts on Cyprus, it can be hard for visitors to know where to start! So here are a few of the basic facts on Cyprus to get you started...
Did you know?
• Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, measuring 9251 sq km and has a coastline of 648 sq km
• Since 1974, Cyprus has been a divided country with the Greek Cypriots living in the south of the island (The Republic of Cyprus) and the Turkish Cypriots living in the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus (TRNC or North Cyprus) which is recognised only by Turkey. On this site I will generally refer to these areas as the North or South for convenience.
• The population of Cyprus is just under 800,000 (around 77% are Greek Cypriot, 18% Turkish Cypriot and 2% Armenian and 3% other)
• Greek is the language spoken in south, and Turkish in the north. English is widely spoken on both sides.
• The highest mountain in Cyprus is Mount Olympus in the Troodos range, which reaches 6420 feet at the peak.
Tourist information
• The climate in Cyprus is mild, with hot summers and cool winters.
• The Cyprus Time Zone is GMT +2.
• The international dialling code for Cyprus is +357.
• Cyprus uses the same electricity and 3-pin plug system as the UK.
• All driving in Cyprus is on the left.
• Visitors from outside EU countries may require a visa. Please contact the Cyprus Embassy to see if this applies to you.
