Cyprus History in the Eurovision Song Contest

Cyprus first appeared in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1981. Since then the country has achieved a result in the top 10 on 9 occasions. The highest position ever reached by Cyprus is 5th, which they have managed three times.

Cyprus first reached 5th place in 1982 with a song called ‘Mono i Agabe’ (The Only Love) sung by Anna Vissi. The island repeated this achievement in 1997 with the song “Mana mou” performed by Hara and Andreas Constantinou and again in 2004 with the British Cypriot singer Lisa Andreas who sang “Stronger Every Minute”.

Because of international laws over the Cyprus conflict, the island always enters the competition as the Republic of Cyprus and therefore usually performs in either Greek or English. However Cyprus broke from tradition for the 2007 when the song ‘Comme Ci, Comme Ca’ was performed in French by Evridiki. Cyprus also aimed for the Italian vote in 2000 when they entered the song ‘Nomiza’ which was sung in a mixture of Greek and Italian!

Cyprus has become notorious in the Eurovision for almost always awarding the highest score of 12 to Greece and vice versa, so much so that it has now become a running joke with British commentators!

Because of the Cyprus conflict, Turkey and Cyprus rarely vote for each other in the competition. In 2003, the countries voted for each other for the first time, an act that clearly had something to do with the border crossing on the island being opened that year for the first time since 1974.

Cyprus Eurovision Entry 2012

The 2012 Cyprus entry is La La Love performed by Ivi Adamou. The song is a lively upbeat dance track with an authentic Cypriot touch. If you live in one of the European countries taking part you can vote for the Cypriot entry in the first semi final which takes place on May 22nd. If the song gets through, it will then go through to the final on May 26th in Baku, Azerbaijan.
