The Cyprus Wine Festival, Limassol

The Cyprus Wine Festival is one of the biggest Cyprus festivals of the year. This annual tradition, started by wine producers began in 1961, celebrates the country’s wines for twelve days every September and the event is so popular that in London British Cypriots also hold a version of this event every summer at Alexandra Palace.

A small entry fee of a few Euros enables you to sample all the wines on show, as well as giving you access to the many theatrical plays and musical performances which take place. Souvenirs are extremely cheap at the festival, and you can pick up wine glasses for as little as 2 Euros.

The Wine Festival is located at the Municipal Gardens in Limassol, and attracts thousands of visitors each year. There are free tours available to the event, which include a guided tour of the Cyprus Wine Museum. It is highly recommended that you book seats on the tour buses at least two days in advance. For more information on the tour departure locations, contact the Cyprus Tourism Organisation.

This is a great opportunity to experience a unique Cyprus festival and of course, to sample some fabulous Cyprus wines! Be sure to check out the most famous of all Cypriot wines - Commandaria, which is believed to be one of the oldest known wines on earth.

It is made from the indigenous Cyprus grapes Mavro and Xyristeri - the later is also used for many other white Cypriot wines. Commandaria is often served at the end of dinner with Cyprus desserts.
