Cyprus Newspapers
Cyprus newspapers are available in supermarkets and grocery stores all over the island. Their news topics often revolve around political issues, with the Greek Cypriot newspapers often discussing matters in Greece and how the Greek news relates to Cyprus and the Turkish Cypriot newspapers doing the same regarding Turkey. Mainland Greek and Turkish newspapers are also widely available. Most newspapers in Cyprus, like the Cyprus people themselves, are strongly community based and include sections announcing people’s weddings and other personal events, as well as large sports and entertainment sections. Many Cyprus newspapers are also available to read online and they are a good place to look for Cyprus jobs.
In South Cyprus you will find some well-known English, French and German papers widely available in tourist areas. These, like the ones imported from Greece and Turkey, are often at least a day or two old. You will also find that the English newspapers, such as The Sun or The Mirror, are much more expensive to buy in Cyprus than they are in Britain!
Popular Cyprus Newspapers
One of the biggest Greek speaking newspapers is Phileleftheros which is published daily and covers both Cypriot and world news. Kypros Simera (meaning Cyprus Today) is also popular and comes out every Friday. It focuses on world news topics. The most right wing Greek Cypriot newspaper is the daily paper Shmerini. The Kibris Gazette is North Cyprus’s most popular newspaper. Both the North and the South of the island print their own English speaking newspapers for expats on Cyprus as well as tourists. Brits in North Cyprus should look for North Cyprus Daily and North Cyprus Free Press. In the South, expats and tourists can check out the Cyprus Mail, a daily paper which provides local TV listings and cinema times. An interesting fact about the Cyprus Mail is that it once appeared in the James Bond movie 'The World is Not Enough' with a front cover made especially for the film!
There is also Cyprus Today, a weekly paper which writes a lot about news in the UK as well as in Cyprus and the rest of the world. The Financial Mirror also comes out weekly, and focuses on Cypriot business and investment matters and includes a supplement in Greek. Also look out for regional newspapers in Cyprus such as the Paphos Post, a free paper paper in English which is dedicated to the latest news and issues of the Paphos district. In December 2004, a revolutionary trilingual Cyprus newspaper called Cyprus Dialogue was introduced to the island. It was the first paper to be published in Greek, Turkish and English. Cyprus Dialogue was created by Turkish Cypriot Reshat Akar, the idea having been given to him 23 years previously by a Greek Cypriot journalist called Alekkos Konstininides. The paper offers advertising space to both Greek and Turkish Cypriots.
Cypriot Newspapers Overseas
The Cypriot press has expanded overseas and produces newspapers for Cypriot communities living abroad so that they can keep up to date with the island’s shenanigans! In London for example, Greek Cypriots turn to Parikiaki. , while Turkish Cypriots read papers such as Londra. Both papers have English speaking sections, and usually offer pages dedicated to buying property in Cyprus.
