Traditional Cyprus Music

Music and dance are very important to Cypriots. Traditional Cyprus music uses instruments like the violin, the bouzouki and the goblet drum. These are also often incorporated in modern Cyprus songs. Because Cyprus is the gateway between continents and has been colonised so many times, Cypriot rhythms have many influences. Old folk music songs were usually about love or heartbreak and some even sang of true stories that occurred in local villages. Many of the more famous traditional Cyprus songs, such as the Greek Cypriot ‘Psarapoulla’ about a fishing boat, are still played today at weddings and other social events in Cyprus.
Modern Cypriot Music

Cypriot music has really evolved and young Cypriots also love international music; especially due to the rise of Ayia Napa as a clubbing resort (garage, hip hop and reggae are very big in Ayia Napa – try Black and White club or River Reggae). Rock music and heavy metal in Cyprus has also been increasingly popular for several decades, starting in the 1970's. Rock gigs take place regularly all over the island, the most famous being in Pissouri. If you like rock music, head to Rock Garden Heaven in Ayia Napa or Old Tunnel Rock Bar in Kyrenia. Some of the most famous rock bands in Cyprus are Katadotes and Quadraphonic. Music in Cyprus is also still heavily influenced by Greece and Turkey. In the Republic, singers from Greece such as Anna Vissi are very popular, as is British born Cypriot singer Sarbel. In the North songs by the world famous singer Tarkan (such as the internationally adapted Kiss Kiss) who is from Turkey can be heard coming from many cars and houses!
