Who wouldn’t want to work in the sunshine? Cyprus jobs offer you just that….

Cyprus jobs are often sought after by non-Cypriots more for lifestyle purposes than career prospects. Many people dream of living and working on the island due to its year-round good weather and laid back culture. What could be better than going to work in the beautiful Cyprus sunshine before taking a break for a siesta in the afternoon when it is considered too hot to work?
The growth of tourism over the last 20 years has created more opportunities for jobs in Cyprus for expats searching for a higher quality of life.
The Job Market and Requirements
Nationals from EU member states have the right to work in south Cyprus since its entry into the EU in 2004 under Article 39 of the EU Treaty (Freedom of Movement). EU citizens must obtain a residence permit within three months of their arrival on the island.
Work permits will only be granted in North Cyprus where no suitable Turkish Cypriots are available. Unlike the Republic, the North did not gain entry into the EU and therefore is not obligated to offer the same rights to EU nationals. Fluency of either Greek or Turkish will improve your chances of working in Cyprus greatly.
Due to the global recession, there are fewer positions in some Cyprus industries than there has been in recent years. The recession has affected wholesale and retail markets and the construction industry.
Tourism has also taken a hit, but is still big enough to find work in. The services sector on both sides of the island is on the rise, and there is a shortage of nurses, teachers and workers in the financial sector. Agriculture is also a dominant industry in the North.
Seasonal Jobs in Cyprus
If you are thinking of working in Cyprus during the summer tourist season you will not need to obtain a residence permit, making this an easy and exciting option. You will find jobs in the leisure and tourism sector all over the island at this time, but the most will be concentrated around the coastal resorts such as Ayia Napa. These jobs are a lot of fun, and a great way to earn money on a long holiday. Competent English is usually required, but knowledge of the local language is a bonus rather than a necessity. Seasonal Cyprus jobs are mostly available in hotels and restaurants. Nightclubs and bars also provide a lot of work, especially for DJ’s, dancers, bar staff and club promoters. If you prefer to be outdoors, you might like consider beach work – where you can spend your days as a lifeguard, or with a water sports or boat tour operator. You do not pay income tax in Cyprus on wages under 17,087€ so it’s likely that you won’t pay any income tax for your seasonal position. There are also a limited number of internships available to students and post-graduates such as the one offered at the AKTI Project and Research centre. The environmental organisation is based in Nicosia, and interns will be required to help raise public awareness of sustainable development.
