The Best Cypriot Cuisine Restaurants
The best way to introduce yourself to Cypriot cuisine is with a meze. A meze is a feast of lots of little Cypriot dishes which come in waves. A meze can be as many as 30 dishes and can be ordered as specialities according to your taste, for example you can have a fish meze, a meat meze, a vegetable meze or one that has everything.
It is great for fussy eaters or picky children as there are so many different dishes to try you can’t go wrong! A typical meze will have both hot and cold dishes and will include dips such as taramosalata and tzatziki, halloumi cheese, kalamari, and kebab meat.
Our favourite Cyprus Cuisine Restaurants
Ficardo’s (Paphos): This is a family run restaurant with a very friendly atmosphere and a nice ambience. They offer Cypriot specialities which are all very tasty and although I don’t eat meat, everyone that I was with loved the steak! It is located on Poseidonos Avenue and also hosts wedding receptions. This is considered to be one of the best Paphos restaurants.
Demokritis Tavern (Paphos): A traditional taverna with Greek Cypriot dancing and entertainment which you will no doubt be roped into joining! This place is also family run, and we found the service very attentive. We were given complimentary shots after the meal which was a nice touch.
Ta Piatakia (Limassol): Not somewhere to go if you want a quiet night, as it is quite small and can get crowded, but it has a vibrant feel and very friendly staff. I probably shouldn’t have put it in the meze section, but it is a nice place to go if you want something different. It offers a more modern twist on traditional Cypriot cuisine and there is a wine room you can go into to choose what you would like.
Anatolia Restaurant (Protaras): This is located near Ayios Elias and serves traditional Cypriot meze. It has a friendly atmosphere and is very reasonably priced. The portions were big and we all enjoyed the desserts!
Sindoma (Famagusta): A popular restaurant serving Turkish delicacies. It is very friendly, and still has an intimate ambience even though tourists seem to know it quite well. A lot of locals eat here, and there is a big range of kebabs on offer. The prices are very good.
Fetta’s Corner (Paphos): Definitely not a glamorous setting, but this is the perfect place to try genuine home-cooked Cypriot cuisine in a relaxed setting. It is very cheap, and largely unknown by tourists.
Abbey Bell Tower (Kyrenia): A place with great views of the famous Bellapais Abbey and the mountains, a great atmosphere and good food. It offers meze and fresh seafood and you can also enjoy a the old photographs and Turkish relics on display.
Tree of Idleness (Kyrenia): This is also located at Bellapais under a 200 year old tree. It is quite popular with tourists and the meze has many hot and cold dishes followed by a main meal. Dessert is usually a fruit platter. There is a very big outdoor space with views of the abbey and on a Saturday night it offers live music and belly dancing for entertainment. We really enjoyed it here.
